XOM’s latest earnings: weak headline, stronger underneath?
ExxonMobil reported Q1 2026 earnings of $4.2 billion, down from $7.7 billion a year ago. That looks rough, but the quarter was heavily affected by temporary hedging and timing issues. Excluding those effects, management says earnings were closer to $8.8 billion.
The company still returned $9.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks, while production in Guyana hit a new record.
So was this actually a weak quarter, or just messy accounting hiding a pretty solid underlying business? The next earnings report should show how much of those temporary losses really reversed.
